Martha Perry, the community safety officer for EDDC, was our
guest speaker and she gave an instructive talk on her work
and the projects for
reducing
nuisance crime and anti-social behaviour in East Dorset. Val
Stillwell provided leaflets for the Good neighbours Scheme
that is being launched in Verwood. We have combined
resources and the scheme will use our newsletters and
website for information. I have agreed to be their Chairman
initially. There is more information in this newsletter
about the scheme which myself and your committee fully
endorse.
For those
of you with the technology please visit our website. The
webmaster and Bill Turley have worked very hard in
developing an attractive and informative site that we can be
proud of. The web address is at the top of this newsletter.
I would
like to have a stall at the Rustic Fayre again this year as
we made a good sum of money from the sale of your donated
books and videos etc. Details are not finalised yet but if
any member has books, videos, CDs or DVDs, knick knacks etc.
they would be willing to donate for our funds we will sell
them. (NO ELECTRICAL GOODS or CLOTHES PLEASE). Further
information will be passed on by Anita Rigler at a future
date.
REPORT FROM INSPECTOR HENLEY
So 2008 is now upon us, and what does
this year hold for us? Hopefully more of the same, as
together we have once again reduced crime from this time
last year. In particular burglary, vehicle and criminal
damage crimes have all decreased, which is testament to all
the efforts of your police service and its partners, such as
East Dorset District Council, Dorset Fire & Rescue Service,
Neighbourhood Watches, Parish & Town Councils, local Schools
& local action groups. When Partners & Communities work
together, so much can be achieved.
Our Safer Neighbourhood Teams now cover the whole EDDC area.
These teams comprise police officers, community support
officers, special constables and police volunteers, all
dedicated to specific areas which are usually in line with
council ward boundaries. Their primary role is to find out
what concerns you have, and then deal with them.
They have dealt with speeding motorists
in areas such as Holt, Alderholt and West Parley. They have
tackled anti-social behaviour in Ferndown, Wimborne and
Verwood town centres and criminal damage in West Parley,
Heatherlands and Colehill.
Hopefully you will see your team
in your area, working to make it safer and feel
safer.
If you have any questions or concerns
regarding the policing in East Dorset, please feel free to
contact me.

Divisional Police Headquarters, Ameysford Road, Ferndown.

And finally.....
A disqualified driver from Verwood, who was continuing to
drive, had for some time managed to elude the clutches of
the police. Taking great steps to evade capture, he would
even turn up at locations early and park some distance away,
so as not to draw attention to himself. However as the
saying goes ‘you can run but you can’t hide’
Knowing that he had a meeting in Poole, police searched a
number of local car parks and eventually found his car. It
was then just a matter of waiting for him to return and stop
him driving off. He was subsequently arrested not only for
driving whilst disqualified, but also drink driving, and
because he was not insured, his car was seized too. One less
danger on our roads!
Fancy yourself as a Radio Presenter?

Forest
FM, our local radio station, is looking for morning
presenters.
If you have ever fancied having a go at being a radio
presenter here is the perfect opportunity, do pop along and
see them or call Steve on

SHEDUCATION
Every year hundreds of sheds and garages are broken into
across Dorset by thieves who steal garden power tools. Many
of these thefts go unnoticed until the following spring when
the victim tries to cut their lawn or hedge.
You can prevent yourself from becoming a statistic by
securing your shed or garage with a strong padlock
and installing a shed alarm. Verwood
Neighbourhood Watch promote a very effective and versatile
alarm, which costs as little as £10 including batteries. It
is used by many members in Verwood and we know of at least
one alarm in Howe Lane which activated when thieves broke
into their garden shed last winter. Nothing was stolen. The
alarms require no installation. All you do is install the
batteries, set the code you want and hey presto it is ready
to work! These alarms are available to view and purchase
from Verwood Town Council offices.
Other crime prevention tips, take a photograph of your
property in case you need proof of ownership for an
insurance claim. Mark everything you can with your postcode
and house number using a permanent or Ultra Violet marker
pen and note the Make, Model and serial number of each piece
of equipment. Please do make the effort - we don’t like
these thieves to get away with it!

POLISH PICTURE SELLERS
Polish Door Step sellers are from time to time knocking at
doors to sell their pictures. If the householder does not
purchase a picture, which is often only a photocopy anyway,
they turn their English written card over and beg for money.
Anita Rigler has therefore provided the following text which
you may wish to keep for dealing with any of these callers.
Hopefully, eventually this can substantially help to reduce
the number of concerned calls we receive (as has happened
with the Nottingham Knockers!).

Our
Membership
This year we have lost some members, not
because they no longer wish to belong: but because they
have no ‘contact’ for the road in which they live to
disseminate information, collect their subscriptions and
provide that personal touch which is at the root of our
success.
Loss of income could also, if ignored,
impair our ability to provide the service that is at
present available.
We have members in the following roads
who have not renewed, possibly through a lack of
Contacts:

Gorse Knoll: Lake Road: Liederbach Drive: & Rosebery

Legged Cross
Hermitage Close, Ringwood Road
Sandhurst Drive & Verwood Road.
If you know of anybody living in these
roads who would be willing to help fill this gap please

There are approximately 6500 homes in Verwood and 600 in
Three Legged Cross and as we at present have only just
over 1300 homes or about 20% in membership: there is
plenty of room for improvement so if you believe in what
we do please encourage your friends and neighbours to
join us.
The better coverage of the area we have the more
effective we can become in assisting the police to
reduce crime.
Every effort is being made to
provide you with the best service that we are able to:
towards this end we have introduced a section on our web
site:

http://www.verwood-3lx-watch.com/tradesmen.php
for traders already on the ‘Recommended by Members
Tradesmens List’ to sponsor us by advertising their
services and this provides us with additional income to
use for your benefit. It is also useful for members to
be able to consult when the paper copy of the list which
is supplied free of charge annually to all members is
not to hand.
Three Legged Cross
During the
February half term a team of youngsters along with Three
Legged Cross Safer Neighbourhood CSO Louise Hamilton,
and local Councillor Vic Redpath undertook the task of
painting the local skate park ramp at Furzelands
Recreation Park, Three Legged Cross. Luckily the weather
was very kind to us and the entire job was finished
after about two and a half hours.

The youngsters all volunteered to participate to tidy up
the skate parks appearance, so it was a nicer place for
both themselves and others to use. PCSO Hamilton said,
“This was a fantastic initiative organised by Vic,
encouraging the local youths to take an interest in an
area they use every day. They worked very well as a team
getting the job done, and also worked very hard -
although some did manage to get more paint on themselves
than the ramps, a good time was had by all."

How much do you know about
Crimestoppers?
Crimestoppers started in Mexico in 1976 when a young man
working in a petrol station was shot dead and the police
made little headway in their investigation. They
believed that certain local people did have information
but were perhaps too frightened to come forward so a
hotline was set up and publicised. Within 72 hours of
the hotline being set up information led to the arrest
of the murderers.
In 1988,
Crimestoppers was introduced to the Metropolitan Police
and since then has spread to every force in the UK.
By
calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 people can pass on
information about crime anonymously and if information
received then leads to an arrest and charge, a reward
can be claimed. Whether it’s that one call that starts
awareness of intelligence or makes up the last piece of
the jigsaw, every call to Crimestoppers counts and they
need every snippet of information the public can give
them.
Last year alone calls to Crimestoppers resulted in 6208
arrests and charges, the recovery of £4.4 million in
stolen goods and drugs worth over £7 million. Since the
launch of “Most Wanted” on the Crimestoppers website in
November 2005
www.crimestoppers-uk.org 310 arrests and charges
have been made as a direct result of appeals being
featured on the site. Seventeen people are currently
arrested each day with the help of information from
Crimestoppers and almost 50% are currently for drug
offences.
Rachelle Randall is
the police co-ordinator for Dorset and is responsible
for actioning the calls and actively publicising and
promoting Crimestoppers within Dorset.
Dorset
Crimestoppers have their own board made up of volunteers
of whom Richard Daubeney is Chairman who work hard to
raise awareness, the board have seen some excellent
results and wish to continue their success. If you have
any questions, would like to become a board member or
feel that Crimestoppers can help you with an initiative
then Rachelle can be contacted on 01202 226144 or
Richard on 01202 601540.
Verwood and
District Good Neighbour Scheme (as at Easter 2008)

Devereux. Station Road Medical Centre
Coordinator:
Val Stilwell POPP Project Leader for
Verwood 07825 206058
Drivers
8 volunteer drivers
have already come forward:
After CRB checks they
will be given first-name-only badges to protect privacy:
but more need to
be recruited.
Drivers
will be refunded 40p per mile and provided with
envelopes addressed to the Treasurer, into which clients
will be asked to seal a contribution towards expenses
Facilitators
2 have already
volunteered, but 3 more need to be found - they
man the mobile phone between 10 & 12 on a weekday, so
clients can book drivers for the next day.
Clients
Will be requested to make
a contribution to expenses, by sealing it into an
envelope and handing it to the driver, to be
delivered to Treasurer with mileage claim monthly.
Service
From June 2008, it will
initially cover 5 miles from Verwood town centre
to cover local clubs, medical and dental practices,
shops, etc. We hope to cover hospitals in the
future, depending on the willingness of volunteer
drivers to contribute more of their spare time?!
POPP project
The Good Neighbour Scheme
has been set up under the auspices of the Verwood and
District Senior Forum (also established by POPP) in
conjunction with the Neighbourhood Watch network.
So it will provide a
supportive network in an area where transport is
difficult: it also offers the advantage to
volunteers of getting to know a greater number of
people in their immediate locality.
The Project Leader
is available via the Town Council Offices on :
01202 820880 or enquire anytime
about volunteer vacancies by leaving a message on
07825 206058
But before this scheme
can be launched, we need at least another 2 Facilitators
and 4 more drivers, so please do let us know
if you know anyone who
can assist in building this supportive network for us
all?

"Bournemouth prize draw"
Some residents in Verwood are receiving letters from a
company called "Bournemouth prize draw"
which says you have definitely won £50,000! Of course
you have to pay a fee and phone a premium rate number
for confirmation of your winnings!
Please
ignore it
